Warhol, 15 Minutes and Byzantium

19Oct09

Earlier this month the Warhol/Icon: the Creation of Image show opened at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. A rather progressive, and entirely smart, show for a historic museum that houses the largest collection of Byzantine icons.
The show focuses on Warhol’s portraiture, exploration of the iconic image and his obsession with fame. The show includes works of Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Mao, Alexander the Great and himself.

Warhol revolutionized modern portraiture with his exploration of the idea that the glamorized self would eventually over take the real. A quality that surely binds all icons whether they be from 400B.C, 1965, or 2009.
