WWII Photography

17Nov09

In edition to my closeted type-love, I’m also a bit of a history nerd and watch a lot of History Channel programing… I’ve been riveted by the series they are currently doing on WWII in HD. The most surprising thing is that most of the film clips are in color—when I didn’t even realize color was being used at the time. They apparently spent over two years compiling films from thousands of civilian, army and journalistic sources. Some beautiful and unexpected war images below (albeit, black and white.)

Unknown, France

Unknown, These children in East London during the Battle of Britain made me think that boy
could have been my father. He was only 3 at the time, but he still remembers the sound of the
bombs. He and his brother, like many London children, were eventually sent to the suburbs for safety.

Robert F. Sargent, D-Day
