definition: Mogollon / (mo-go-yon) / Spanish slang word for Plenty or Abundance. Commonly used to signify “a lot,” e.g.,“I like you mogollon.”

The New York design studio, Mogollon, is comprised of two friends Francisco Lopez and Monica Brand. Together they have worked in the fields of art direction, branding, graphic design, typography, illustration, motion graphics, and web presence. Their client list includes Warner Brothers, Blender Magazine, VH1, Codigo Magazine, PS1 MoMA, Schematic Records, Matador Records, Vagabond and many more.

Inspiration: Michelle Thompson

Using a combination of traditional collage technique and digital manipulation, Michelle Thompson creates powerful imagery reminiscent of the Dadaists but with a contemporary twist. Working with both found and created imagery, Michelle utilizes forms that are figurative, abstract and typographic to create a new visual statement. She has worked with numerous newspapers, magazines and book publishers around the world.

Tonight Steven Zevitas Gallery will hold a reception for David X. Levine:
Brian Wilson Loves You. This is David’s 3rd solo show with us and the new work displays an impressive new direction for him. Continuing to work with colored pencil, David has dramatically increased his scale and added new elements of collage and pattern. Heavily influenced by music, David’s work is involved with intuitive form

Inspiration: Dada

The art movement that began during World War I in Zürich can still be felt in art and design today—especially in it’s use of collage. Dadaist ideas of anti-politics, anti-art and anything anti-establishment were revolutionary at the time and encompassed all arts including literature, poetry, and music. I think many don’t even know about, and/or underestimate, it’s impact as many Dadaists eventually moved into later developments of the avante garde such as Nouveau, Surrealism and Pop Art.

The ideas of the founding Dadaists have influenced so many modern and contemporary movements from writers such as Jack Karouac and Alan Ginsberg to photographers such as Robert Frank and Nan Goldin and even Punk Rock. But now, more than ever, I see it’s influence in so many contemporary projects both in the design world and contemporary art. I can still vividly remember the impact the 1997 Hannah Hoch show at the MoMA had on me as an art student and I can’t help seeing her influence in so many things.

*I should note that Schwitters was technically denied inclusion into the Dadaists for not being political enough, I still think his work has obvious ties.

How great is this campaign for Dear Creatures 2009 Fall collection? I love the retro, modern—yet still current and fresh—style of the entire look book.

The interplay of graphic design, illustration, photography and fashion is so well done.

And, the clothes are pretty cool too. For the Bostonians, Poor Little Rich Girl on Newbury carries their line.

Thanks to Lilliebe, I found this awesome designer and illustrator, Mark Weaver. His portfolio is quite varied stylistically, but I was especially drawn to his personal work combining illustration and text.

I see a lot of art work at my job with New American Paintings magazine, and this wildlife/game theme has been popping up a lot in the past few years—but, I find his approach fresh and I love his treatment of the text.

Inspiration: from Russia, with Love

So, I’m all about inspiration this week as I continue to gear up for a week of marathon invite designing! I really admire Rodchenko and Russian Constructivism of the 1920s and have been sifting through a lot of images to inspire me…

And, remember the Shepard Fairey bags from the Spring season? A lot of people gave Fairey and Saks a lot of flak, but I think the senior VP of Marketing at Saks put it best when he said: “What we do every day, really, is propaganda.”
