New Illustration

I’m really excited to report I have signed on two new fantastic illustrators for the next issue of sloane: Michelle Thompson from the UK, (whom I wrote about back in November) and Randi Antonsen of Norway. I have long been drawn to collage work and these two are creating some really fantastic, high quality imagery. Check out some examples of their work below and lots more on their websites. Summer issue featuring their illustrations will be out June 15th.

Delicious Design League, based in Chicago, has been churning out beautiful and original gig posters since 2008. Begun by two designer friends as a side project,
their biz has grown from a small print shop, to a full business with requests to design for some the worlds biggest bands. My husband and I have purchased gig posters throughout our relationship and I will be certain to add a few of these to our collection. Enjoy.

Mindtrip: fashion, madness and paranoia.

After a photo shoot in Paris for Hintmag, the folks at My Orange Box received five images and the challenge to create a flash animation that reflected visions of madness and paranoia. The animation was created in After Effects and then imported into Flash to create the interactive elements. I think it is a beautiful and very successful piece. Click here to view.

TypoFlat: Free Type & Art

TypoFlat is a free vector project created by Branislav S. Cirkovic. Cirkovic’s mission is to have a free flow of creation with no money or clients involved and encourages the user to change his creations however they want. The imagery alone is pretty great.

Modern Day Santa

This weekend, my family got on the topic about the origins of Christmas and the development of the image of the modern-day Santa. I always assumed it was largely due to the illustrations of Norman Rockwell, but my mother asserted that it was much earlier with Harper’s illustrator, Thomas Nast, so I did some research and found a good explanation on the Ohio State University Library website:

Nast first drew Santa Claus for the 1862 Christmas season Harper’s Weekly cover and center-fold illustration to memorialize the family sacrifices of the Union during the early and, for the north, darkest days of the Civil War. Nast’s Santa appeared as a kindly figure representing Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of Christ. His use of Santa Claus was melancholy, sad for the faltering Union war effort in which Nast so fervently believed, and sad for the separation of soldiers and families. When Nast created his image of Santa Claus he was drawing on his native German tradition of Saint Nicholas, a fourth century bishop known for his kindness and generosity. In the German Christian tradition December 6 was (and is) Saint Nicholas day, a festival day honoring Saint Nicholas and a day of gift giving. Nast combined this tradition of Saint Nicholas with other German folk traditions of elves to draw his Santa in 1862.

Vintage Miami

Check out these great vintage posters and postcards of old Miami. Looking at these
I think so much seems to have changed about the city, yet the Deco architecture still
looks the same today.

Inspiration: Michelle Thompson

Using a combination of traditional collage technique and digital manipulation, Michelle Thompson creates powerful imagery reminiscent of the Dadaists but with a contemporary twist. Working with both found and created imagery, Michelle utilizes forms that are figurative, abstract and typographic to create a new visual statement. She has worked with numerous newspapers, magazines and book publishers around the world.
