I was reminded today of the work of the late Anton Stankowski. A pioneer of Constructive Graphic Art, his creations were always so simple, yet perfect. He also often utilized the Univers font family which has always been one of my favorites.

I love this font created by Sam Shand. Self-described as a “neo-cursive,
sans serif font.” I especially like the creative handling of the ligatures.

Limited Edition AisleOne 2010 Letterpress Calendar

Perhaps next year I’ll get my act together and design my own calendar, but for now I’ll recommend this one from Brooklyn based designer, Antonio Carusone/ AisleOne. A lover of minimalism, grid systems and typography, his work is clean, classic—the small details: perfect. As described on his website:

The print features a calendar with the year printed in English, Italian, French and German.
The 2010, the days of the week, and the edition number line are all printed blind, and of course,
the type is set in Helvetica. Each print is numbered and signed.

The size of the calendar is 16.5″ x 23.5″ (A2) and printed on Crane LettraFluorescent White 110#
(300gsm) paper, which is specially made for letterpress. The quality of the paper is superb and
gives the print an extra special feel to it.

New Book for the Wish list…

Taschen recently released A Visual History of Typeface & Graphic Styles 1628-1900. The book was edited by the late Jan Tholenaar, a Dutch bibliophile who adored ornamental metal type. Many have criticized the book for numerous historical inaccuracies and overly fluffy descriptions, but the book is still undeniable a beautiful and great visual history of decorative metal type. I would love to add it to my collection and get more historical inspiration for my invitations…

Beantown Font Scandal…

On Tuesday, NBC was served with a lawsuit from the country’s leading typographic design firm, The Font Bureau, Inc. According to Cityfile, the Boston-based company is asking for “no less than $2 million” in damages for what it argues is the unauthorized use of it’s typefaces for shows such as, The Jay Leno Show, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Font Bureau claims that this unauthorized use has, “caused injury to Font Bureau’s relationships with present and prospective customers,” will make it more difficult for Font Bureau to enter into licensing deals with other companies, and “will cause confusion, mistake and deception as to the source of Font Bureau’s trademarks.”
A bold move for a company that is usually more concerned with good design over licensing rights. Stay tuned…

Like my secret love of European history, depressing Russian literature, and gossip magazines I have another confession to make: I am a closet type-nerd. My most recent obsession is Tungsten a new font family from Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Definitely adding this to the library soon.
