Michelle Thompson Illustration
I have raved about Michelle Thompson’s work numerous times in past posts. I was so smitten with her work I even asked her to contribute to my digital magazine, Sloane (see below). So, I was pretty happy to discover she now has an affordable store on her website. My husband and I have already ordered Stag and Pets for our place.

New York Armory Arts Week
Today I am starting to get excited about going down to New York this Friday for Armory Arts Week where I will be running around shooting photos of New American Paintings artists for our blog. I’ll be hitting Armory Show, VOLTA, Pulse and hopefully Scope. Be sure to check out the New American Paintings’ Blog next week for highlights. Just thinking about the trip, makes me nostalgic for my days at SVA.
And, I am reminded of this great odd to New York by Jerry Saltz that breaks my heart a little bit every time I read it.

God Save Radiohead
So, they have done it again: A great new album that feels like a nice evolution from InRainbows and a fantastic video for the first single Lotus Flower. His signature jig deserved to be immortalized in the this art-house style video.

Dear Oprah
My recent letter to Oprah…can you blame a girl for trying?
Dear Oprah,
When I was 13 I saw my first issue of Sassy magazine and KNEW I wanted to create a publication own. Flash forward to age 33, with over 8 years in the publishing industry and the advent of digital publishing, I decided to finally start my own. Thus, sloane, was born.
sloane: Ideas for the Urbane Woman.
“sloane is a new digital magazine for sophisticated, modern women. Content includes features on fashion, beauty, career, relationships, art, home decor, cooking, travel, health and more. sloane seeks to address the 21st century woman who is redefining traditional female roles. We are not our mother’s daughters, we are not 20, we don’t accept the settle-down ideas of the past and we are changing the idea of “Happily Ever After” every day. This is what sloane is about—a place that combines the youthfulness we still possess with the wisdom and polish we never had when we were younger.
The sloane woman has everything she had at 20, but with a unique style, confidence, achievement and self-possession that is: sloane. “
Knowing the pitfalls and challenges of magazine publishing well, I set out to create a model that would avoid some of those challenges and that would embrace the future of publishing. Over the course of the next year I served as publisher, editor, art director, designer, and head of marketing.
There were 4 issues, lots of excitement, panic attacks, joy, fear, self-doubt, perseverance, sleep deprivation and a lot of satisfaction. In that time sloane became a moderate success and reached a readership of approximately 11,200 in more than 30 countries. But, the divide between success and sustained funding is wide and so, for now, she has been put on hiatus.
I write simply because I wanted you to know that sloane existed and that I tried, that is all.
Sincerely,
Dana Cordova
That’s all folks, my last ditch effort

For the sixth year, I was asked to design the Boston Art Dealer’s Association invitation for their annual Art in the Atrium event to honor the winners of the Stephen D. Paine Scholarship. The annual scholarship benefits art students studying at Boston-area institutions such as MassArt and the School of the Museum
of Fine Arts. Continuing with the desire to create a piece that would be both winter
and spring in it’s feel, I went with a cool color palette and a bold, 60s-floret motif.
I personally love the teal and red combination. For my art world friends, look for it coming to a mailbox near you soon…

Good-bye Sloane
It is with a heavy heart that I announce that sloane will be taking an indefinite hiatus. sloane was first just a dream, then a joke amonst friends over too much wine, quickly a reality, and then most surprisingly of all: a success. But, the divide between success and sustained funding
is wide—and so, for now—she bids you farewell.
I thank you for your interest and support.

Stay in Touch:
The site will remain active for a few months, so please be sure to enjoy
the Winter Issue
You can also download ALL 4 issues and load them into your iPad, Kindle or any other e-reader.
If you do not already do so, you can follow sloane on Twitter where I will continue to stay true to the sloane mission and bring you tips on fashion, shopping, beauty, career, the arts and anything that sparks my sassy, fancy, mind.
Thank you for a great year—onward and upward.

Over the fall I had the pleasure of working on the MGH Development Department’s premiere event: the Storybook Ball. As I mentioned in a previous post, this year they went with an Aladdin inspired, Arabian theme. I love pattern and have always loved old manuscripts, so this was an especially fun project to research and work on.
Working closely with the MGH team, Rafanelli Events, and Grossman Marketing
I created a layered invitation package designed to look like a bundle of rugs and fastened with a beautiful craft paper. As the recipient opened the bundle, each rug revealed information about the ball, committee and MGH donors. For the event I then created a program book designed to look like an ancient manuscript which was then printed on a thick, brown paper to mimicked the look of an old leather volume.
